Tyler, Texas—Democratic Congressional Candidate Hank Gilbert on Friday questioned why incumbent Louie Gohmert has supported the rollback of key EPA rules relating to accidental discharges from chemical plants.
“As we evaluate the situation in Port Neches, with a company that has been fined numerous times by the EPA and Texas regulators, the biggest question in my mind at the moment is what would ever possess someone like Louie Gohmert to decide that it isn’t important that people know what is belching and leaking from a chemical plant at a time like this,” Gilbert said.
“Maybe it is that polluting chemical companies like Koch Industries are among his top single contributors,” Gilbert notes.
“About a week ago, the administration also rolled back the Chemical Disaster Rule that would have required major investigations of something like the Port Neches explosion. Since that rule came about after the disaster with the fertilizer plant in West, Texas, I think Gohmert owes his constituents an answer on whether or not he supported the Trump administration on this one,” Gilbert said.
“Louie needs to come clean and admit to his constituents that it isn’t their best interests, but the best interests of his well-moneyed supporters that he advocates for daily in Congress. At least he should be honest about that,” Gilbert said.
