Tyler, Texas—Hank Gilbert, a Tyler rancher and small businessman opposing Rep. Louie Gohmert in the 2020 race for Texas’s First Congressional District Thursday evening condemned the 14-year incumbent for saying that impeachment of the president would lead to a civil war in the United States.
“It’s about to push this country to a civil war—if they were to get their wishes,” Gohmert said of impeaching the president during a speech on the house floor today.
Gilbert, the challenger, was incensed that Gohmert “has stooped so low in his rhetoric.”
“Louie Gohmert even hinting that the majority of Republicans would take up arms against their country over the impeachment of a president that is probably the most corrupt, self-enriching, and dangerous chief executive we’ve ever had in office is probably the dumbest thing he’s ever done, in a long line of greatest hits,” Gilbert said.
“To think that the people of his district would exercise their Second Amendment Rights by marching down to Bergfeld Park in Tyler and recreating the battle of Gettysburg with live ammunition to see whether the pro-Impeachment Americans or pro-Trump Americans control the Azaela District is both asinine and dangerous,” Gilbert said.
“No Republican I know—and I know a lot of Republicans—has ever suggested to me they’d take up arms and declare a coup had taken place if there was sufficient evidence to actually impeach this President,” Gilbert said.
“The people of our district aren’t preparing for a revolution, they are stuck in traffic and in need of better transportation infrastructure, watching a spinning wheel instead of enjoying family movie night because they are in need of better rural broadband infrastructure, and wondering how they are going to pay for college,” Gilbert said.
“Worse than that, he owes an apology to every African American in this country, because he’s out there talking about a civil war. Our one and only civil war in this country was fought over slavery. The South lost. To equate fighting a civil war to free slaves held in bondage with an alleged civil war over impeaching a madman that puts our national security at risk is nothing more than racist, dog whistle politics at its absolute worst. It’s to appeal to the lowest common denominator among the people in our district—the white supremecists.
“For Louie Gohmert to use this kind of dogwhistle racism to rile them up is not reflective of the values of our district,” he continued.
“It is an embarrassment to the people he represents. We love our neighbor in East Texas, we do not have shootouts on the square over the impeachment of the president with our neighbor,” Gilbert said.
“The Democratic Party mascot is the jacksss, and the way Louie Gohmert behaves, I’ve been thinking he should reach out to the Democratic National Committee and see about licensing the right to use the jackass as his logo,” Gilbert said. “Because it fits.”
